Hotline Question of the Month

by Margaret Jeronim

Question:

“When running a summary application that is built over multiple files with millions of records in each, the build process of the summary seems to take an exceptionally long time.

What can I do to speed it up?”

Answer:

When building an mrc summary or report you have an option to select three database methods (L - Logical, O-OPNQRY, S-SQL).

When using the Logical File database method make sure to save the logical file for the next run if you are concerned about speed. (Flag "Save Logical Files" to Y in option 6 - Application Defaults).

Using fields from a secondary file in sequencing, run time selection criteria, or selection criteria on calculations will force the OPNQRY database method.

If your summary still takes a long time to build, try the SQL database method.

It is easy to try running the same summary using different database methods.
