Hotline Question of the Month

Question:

When using the MRCSPLSND command, some addresses do not receive the e-mail. For this particular problem, there is no error message received. Some of the addresses may receive the e-mail, some may not. Why is this happening?

Answer:

Before understanding the explanation, it is relevant to look at an example of what the e-mail may look like coming off the AS/400.

Example:
MRO@S123456G.EXAMPLECOMPANY.COM

Now, when AOL, Netscape, and other ISP’s (internet service providers) receive mail, they often times do what is called a reverse DNS check to make sure the mail is legitimate and not SPAM or other types of bogus mail being sent to them. The way they do this is to check the domain part of the from-address.

In this case:
S123456G.EXAMPLECOMPANY.COM

The ISPs more or less ping this domain to see if it exists. In many cases, including this example, it will not be successful because it is just an e-mail address off the AS/400, not a real domain. As a result, the ISP may reject it.

The way to get around this is to contact your local ISP to put in some type of entry so that when S123456G.EXAMPLECOMPANY.COM is checked/pinged, it will respond as a positive. Once this is in place, the e-mail should be allowed through.
