Hotline Question of the Month

by Margaret Jeronim

Question:

“ I would like to build a report that will list our top 100 customers based on sales value.

How can I accomplish that? ”

Answer:

In order to create a report that will print your top 100 customers by their sales value, you will need to create a summary file first.

The summary file will allow for collection of data from files.

Then, you will need to sequence by customer sales value in descending order. You will also need to create a calculation that will act as a counter field for each output record (so top customer is #1, the second best is #2, etc).

Make sure you write the calculation field to your file since you're going to select records in the report based on the value in that field.

After the summary file is created, you can start building your report over it. In the record selection criteria of your report you will need to select only records where the counter field is less than or equal to 100 (LE 100).

This will only allow you to list your top 100 customers.
