Want to make your data less boring and more readable? Use images and charts within your data listings. This makes rows of data easier to scan, without forcing you to analyze every row within your application.
For example, which of the tables below would you rather use? This data listing with no images, or this data listing with images? See how much easier you can scan your data when you add images? When I just glance at the second application, I can instantly tell which customers have the highest credit rating or the most sales.
This application uses another handy technique called “the hover.” When you place your mouse cursor over the icons in the “Salesman” or “Customer Name” columns, a little box pops up with more information. Hovers are great when you want to place a lot of information on one page without overwhelming the user.
So remember, when you create data listing applications, use some imagery and hovers (if necessary). Your applications will not only look prettier, but they will be more readable for the end user.
