Did you know that there is already more data in the world than there is space to store it? I recently ran across that surprising fact in this CIO.com article. The article goes on to say that the “demand for storage capacity will, over the next three years, increase at a compound annual rate of nearly 50 per cent.”
In other words, if you’re currently overwhelmed with data, just wait…it gets worse.
Now, I realize there are many types of data that companies struggle with: Emails, voicemails, Word/Excel files stored on their network, enterprise data stored in a database, and much more. While I can’t address every data type, I do have some tips for those struggling to get a handle on their growing enterprise data.
What do I mean by “enterprise data?” I’m referring to data such as customer orders, sales, revenue, etc… In other words: The data that tells you just how good or bad your company is doing. Here are a few of my favorite tools for dealing with overwhelming amounts of enterprise data:
The interactive report provides a very high level view of your data, but also lets you drill down and filter your data in any way possible. To see for yourself, just press the little [+] icon next to each year, or choose any of the record selections on the left side. You’ll soon see that the interactive report makes loads of data quite manageable.
The ranking report is great for handling lots of data, but in a different way than the interactive report. It lets you choose which data you want to see, and then creates top/bottom rankings for that data. For instance, suppose you only want to see the top performing products for the last year? Or, maybe you want to see which areas generated the lowest amount of sales? That’s where the ranking report shines.
This is a great feature built into the above applications. How does it help you handle data? Suppose you’re digging deep into an interactive report. You’ve applied countless filters and drill-downs, when you suddenly notice an important trend inside that data that you’ve never seen before. The “saved searches” feature lets you store all the criteria and filters used to find that important trend, eliminating the risk of forgetting how you found it.
Are you currently overwhelmed with enterprise data? The interactive and ranking reports combined with saved searches are great tools for managing uncontrollable data, and we’ll be happy to show you. If you want to see one of those two reports built over your own data, we’ll gladly build you a free proof of concept. Just fill out this short form to get started.
