As businesses create more data than ever before, they need better methods to capitalize on this data. As data grows (and it will), so will the need for Business Intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, while we stand on the verge of a BI explosion, we\u2019re also seeing significant changes. Mobile technologies have improved. The cloud has grown into a viable business option. Increasingly powerful web development technologies open new opportunities. These trends, among others, are leading to the next wave of BI. <\/p>\n<p>So, where is BI heading? Today, let\u2019s take a look at what\u2019s in store for the next year. What big BI trends can we expect in 2014, or the early part of 2015? Which areas of BI will grow in the coming year? We posed those questions to a few experts in the area, and have compiled their thoughts (along with some of my own) below. Here are 7 big BI trends to watch in 2014:<\/p>\n<h3>1. BI adapts to a multi-screen world <\/h3>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 1.7em; background-image: none; margin-left: 0; padding-left: 18px; height: auto;\"><p>\n\u201cThere is increasing demand on mobile BI,\u201d says Kiran Nandavarapu, Senior Manager with <a onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Blog', 'Source', 'Blue Ocean']); \" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueoceanmi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: red;font-weight: bold\">Blueocean Market Intelligence<\/span><\/a>. \u201cHowever, the market is still debating how to deliver mobile, what capabilities to offer, and which devices to support. And despite all the hype, mobile is still something BI teams have to push users to embrace.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_6984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6984\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrc-productivity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/small_8371683905.jpg\" alt=\"photo credit: miniyo73 via photopin cc\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6984\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/miniyo73\/8371683905\/\">miniyo73<\/a> via <a href=\"http:\/\/photopin.com\">photopin<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\">cc<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><span style=\"line-height: 1.7em;\">While mobile BI usage is still growing, I believe we\u2019re moving towards something even bigger. We\u2019re entering a multi-screened world&#8211;one that goes beyond smartphones, tablets, and PCs. We\u2019re seeing smart devices (like watches and glasses), each with different interfaces and screen sizes. <\/spam\n\nIt may not happen this year, but the next big BI push will involve adapting to the coming, web-connected, multi-screened world. BI will soon deliver real-time information to any device and screen size, exactly when the user needs it.\n\n\n\n<h3>2. Collaborative BI takes off<\/h3>\n<p>Despite the web\u2019s social nature, Business Intelligence software remains largely \u201cun-social.&#8221; While we see collaborative features increasing within BI software, <a onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Blog', 'Outside Link', 'Dresner']); \" href=\"http:\/\/sandhill.com\/article\/dresner-report-on-collaborative-business-intelligence-trends-reveals-where-collaboration-is-most-valued\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: red;font-weight: bold\">this study<\/span><\/a> from Dresner Advisory Services finds that BI collaboration still largely occurs the old-fashioned way&#8211;via meetings and email.<\/p>\n<p>As companies seek to gain more value from their data, we\u2019ll see this change. We\u2019ll see more social features invade traditional BI software, with collaboration occurring within the BI application rather than email and meetings.<\/p>\n<h3>3. BI breaks out of the silos<\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest problems with traditional BI solutions: Silos. Different departments store data in different systems, which leaves business leaders trying to make sense of different data from different sources. Going forward, we\u2019ll see a convergence in BI, giving executives the data they need from a single source.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 1.7em; background-image: none; margin-left: 0; padding-left: 18px; height: auto;\"><p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7202\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrc-productivity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/small_3275014857.jpg\" alt=\"photo credit: anthony arrigo via photopin cc\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7202\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/anthonyfarrigo\/3275014857\/\">anthony arrigo<\/a> via <a href=\"http:\/\/photopin.com\">photopin<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\">cc<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cCompanies now understand that Big Data analysis executed in silos doesn&#8217;t provide a complete picture,\u201d says Nandavarapu. \u201cIn order to achieve the maximum benefits, companies have to synthesize analytic results across domains (customer, supply chain, marketing, etc.) and work to produce holistic insights. Since traditional technology often struggles to cope up with the volume and variety of new and complex sources of data, new data mining and extracting tools have been introduced specifically designed to handle disparate sources of data. With the right architecture and tools, these systems can interact intelligently, share data and\/or analytic results between components and minimize data movement. As a result, overall analysis efficiency has been given a boost and producing better returns.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>4. BI becomes proactive<\/h3>\n<p>BI solutions of the past provided a reactive approach&#8211;offering historical analysis of business data on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. While useful for understanding the business, reactive BI doesn\u2019t capitalize on the rise of real-time data.<\/p>\n<p>As more companies adopt real-time analytic solutions, we\u2019ll see a rise in proactive BI. This approach alerts users to important data changes as they happen, and lets business leaders make quick, yet informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p>For example, we\u2019ll see more BI solutions that automatically alert business leaders to real-time, dramatic shifts in data. This proactive approach will help businesses become more agile, and address problems as they occur&#8211;not days later.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Self-Service BI improves efficiency <\/h3>\n<p>Traditional BI methods involved end users going through the IT department for reports and analytics, or creating their own reports on spreadsheets. As BI tools become simpler, we\u2019re seeing that change. BI is moving outside of the IT department and into the hands of business users&#8211;creating a rise in BI efficiency. <\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 1.7em; background-image: none; margin-left: 0; padding-left: 18px; height: auto;\"><p>\n\u201cSelf-service BI equips users with direct access to business data and empowers them to collect and analyze data independent of the IT department,\u201d explains Tiemo Winterkamp, Senior VP of Global Marketing at <a onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Blog', 'Source', 'arcplan']); \" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcplan.com\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: red;font-weight: bold\">arcplan<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWith modern tools users can create dashboards and ad-hoc reports on their own, something that was previously only possible with the aid of IT specialists. Using self-service capabilities, organizations allocate resources wisely by providing information workers with a guided analytics approach to BI. Self-service BI paves the way for workers to be autonomous, thereby improving productivity and increasing the efficiency of business processes. With this business impact, this trend will continue to grow in 2014 and beyond.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>6. Data visualization improves<\/h3>\n<p>As self-service BI grows, software must become simpler. It must display data in a way that\u2019s easily understandable for anyone&#8211;not just data scientists. For this reason, we\u2019ll see BI solutions provide improved data visualizations for all user levels.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 1.7em; background-image: none; margin-left: 0; padding-left: 18px; height: auto;\"><p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7794\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrc-productivity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/user-defined-dashboard-300x224.png\" alt=\"Buyers want customizable dashboards\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mrc-productivity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/user-defined-dashboard-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mrc-productivity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/user-defined-dashboard.png 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buyers want customizable dashboards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cI just published my <a onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Blog', 'Outside Link', 'BI Research']); \" href=\"http:\/\/www.softwareadvice.com\/bi\/buyerview\/report-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: red;font-weight: bold\">research<\/span><\/a> on business intelligence software buyer trends for 2014 and one big takeaway was that buyers overwhelmingly want better data visualization,\u201d says Abe Selig, Business Intelligence Researcher at <a onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Blog', 'Source', 'Software Advice']); \" href=\"http:\/\/www.softwareadvice.com\/bi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: red;font-weight: bold\">Software Advice<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWhat this tells me is that business intelligence is moving away from the exclusive realm of data analysts and falling into the hands of business professionals who want the insights that accompany BI. Over 60% of prospective BI software buyers are business professionals (rather than IT professionals). These professionals are looking for the decision-making support that comes with BI, but don\u2019t want to get bogged down in the weeds studying the data that BI has traditionally entailed. They want to see what the data means, and they want to see it quickly, and easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, my report shows that the most requested business intelligence applications from buyers right now are customizable dashboards and scorecards. While current BI users are generally satisfied with their reporting capabilities, they want to better visualize the data they are collecting. Buyers want a BI tool that can pull data from their existing systems into an attractive, informative, easy-to-understand dashboard. This also points to the awakening of non BI professionals to the decision-making support of business intelligence and the growing desire to harness its insights for unique, company-specific information in a clear way.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>7. Cloud-based BI grows<\/h3>\n<p>While cloud-based BI certainly isn\u2019t new, we\u2019ll see significant growth this year. As data volume grows, managing that data in-house becomes more challenging. The pain of maintaining infrastructure combined with the growing maturity of the cloud will result in more businesses moving their BI to cloud services. <\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 1.7em; background-image: none; margin-left: 0; padding-left: 18px; height: auto;\"><p>\n\u201cThe initial apprehensions around the reliability, safety and sustainability of cloud computing are slowly fading away, and companies are increasing their overall spend on cloud infrastructure,\u201d explains Nandavarapu. \u201cThe intersection of analytics and cloud is creating new value and means to exploit Big Data. Cloud versions of BI software will rise in 2014 due to various benefits it provides such as ease of use, flexibility, reduced costs, lower implementation time and faster ROI.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, what do you think?
