While m-Power applications allow for the complete customization of field order while building your application, there are times when one user may find it useful to compare two columns side-by-side while another user wishes to compare two completely different columns. It is certainly feasible in this situation to have two applications or two different presentation layers, however this becomes less feasible when you have many users, all of whom want a custom column configuration.
Instead, consider utilizing the Draggable Columns Inquiry. This retrieval template builds your application as desired with the features normally found in a retrieval, however it also features:
- Dragging and dropping the columns in any desired order
- Resizing each column as desired
- Remembers the last column configuration within the same browser using HTML5
This allows for important columns to be placed next to one another while less important columns can be resized to take up less space. Since this template also utilizes the latest HTML5 feature set, once you have found your ideal column configuration, it will remain that way every time you return to the application until you choose to modify it again. Ultimately, this provides the maximum configuration for your end user while only requiring one application in order to accomplish the same thing that would normally require many applications.
In order to accomplish this functionality, the template uses a jQuery plugin called “sorttable” found here, as well as HTML5 features for storing local data within your browser. While this will require a standards based browser, older browsers handle this gracefully as your end users will still be able to view the retrieval and resize/reorder the columns, they will simply not have their configurations saved. Since this template does require external files, please be sure to install this template to both development and production.
